ARC Linkage Project - Visible Migrants and Refugees in Rural and Regional Australia
Our Linkage project with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) and the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) commenced in February 2009. The project aims to examine the interrelated social, economic and political factors that shape the resettlement experiences of recent visible migrants and refugees who live primarily in rural and regional Victoria. Over a three year period, the project will document and assess the experiences of visible migrants and refugees by exploring their sense of identity and belonging; their patterns of employment; the ways in which host communities respond and adapt to them; and the effectiveness of governments’ resettlement and other policies at Commonwealth, state and local levels. The project also has applied policy aims of informing state and local government and improving policy design and management in this area.
The project is running out of the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne. The Chief Investigators of the project are Professor Brian Galligan and Dr Millsom Henry-Waring. The project staff at the University of Melbourne also involves Dr Martina Boese (postdoctoral fellow), Ms Melissa Phillips (PhD candidate & APAI scholarship holder) and Ms Dora Horvath (research assistant).
