ARC Linkage Project: Resettling Visible Migrants and Refugees in Rural and Regional Australia

Our Linkage Project with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) and the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC) in the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet commenced in February 2009. The project aims to examine the interrelated social, economic and political factors that shape the resettlement experiences of recently arrived visible migrants and refugees who live primarily in rural and regional areas. Over a three year period, the project will document and assess the experiences of visible migrants and refugees by exploring their sense of identity and belonging; their patterns of employment; the ways in which host communities respond and adapt to them; and the effectiveness of government resettlement and other policies at Commonwealth, state and local levels. The project also has applied policy aims of informing state and local government and improving policy design and management in this area.

The project is run out of The School of Social and Political Sciences at The University of Melbourne led by Chief investigator, Professor Brian Galligan. Project staff at The University of Melbourne also include Dr Martina Boese (postdoctoral fellow) and Ms Melissa Phillips (PhD candidate and APAI scholarship holder).
